Princess Mako of Japan will cede her title to marry commoner Kei Komuro, and her decision is being compared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal exit.
On Tuesday, Princess Mako tied the knot with her college sweetheart Kei Komuri. The ceremony took place at a local office. The 30-year-old niece of Emperor Naruhito will be leaving her imperial family after marrying Kei since he is a commoner. She is merely following the law in Japan, according to an Access Online report.
Aside from that, she will be surrendering her royal title. As if that weren’t enough, she even rejected a $1.3 million payout from the Japanese government. Earlier reports suggested that Mako suffered from PTSD after her relationship with a commoner drew flak from the media.

Mako and Kei opened up to the press about their relationship after the wedding. “I am very sorry for the inconvenience caused and I am grateful for those … who have continued to support me,” Princess Mako said, per the BBC.
“For me, Kei is irreplaceable — marriage was a necessary choice for us.”
“I love Mako. We only get one life, and I want us to spend it with the one we love,” Kei said. “I feel very sad that Mako has been in a bad condition, mentally and physically, because of the false accusations.”
Princess Mako and Kei met in Tokyo at the International Christian University, while they were studying abroad.
