Fans of Better Call Saul are curious about what Bob Odenkirk drank in the desert scene. A screenwriter on the series, Gordan Smith divulged details about what he drank while taping season 5 episode dubbed “Bagman.”
In the aforesaid episode, Saul Goodman (Jimmy McGill) meets up with the Salamanca Cousins for their bail money exchange that leads to the shootout. Taking notice of the location of the meetup, Breaking Bad fans, realizing it is where Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and Walter White (Bryan Cranston) first cooked meth together,
“Bagman” doesn’t just foreshadow Breaking Bad. The episode shows how Jimmy and Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) strengthen their relationship. The first season of Better Call Saul, fans see Mike working in the parking lot of the courthouse where Jimmy works. Their bond continues to develop throughout five seasons until it reaches an entirely new level when Mike saves Jimmy from the shootout.
“When Mike shows up, I think it’s, of course, a huge relief to Jimmy, although he is so utterly in shock and so traumatized at the point that Mike makes his presence known,” Gilligan said in an interview with AMC. “I don’t even know if Jimmy knows what planet he’s on at that particular moment,” he added.
During a Twitter Q&A, curious fans raised questions about what Jimmy drank during the shooting, which looked like his pee. Odenkirk was actually drinking a mixture of apple juice, diluted with water, and food coloring to make it look like urine for the cameras. Whoever created this behind the scene convinced viewers that the drink might actually have been urine.
Filming the “Bagman” episode of Better Call Saul was the single hardest thing Gilligan ever directed. “Bagman” doesn’t seem like much on the surface since it revolves around two men wandering through the desert for the most part. Considering the car crash and shooting that happens in the episode, the challenges faced by Gilligan are easy to understand.
