‘OMITB’: Selena Gomez Says ‘Signed My Life Away To Disney’

Selena Gomez is all set to return on television with a new series, “Only Murders in the Building” on Hulu.

Selena had kept TV series at an arm’s length since her last appearance as Alex Russo in “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2012. This Disney Channel television series had positioned her as a youth icon in her teens.

On Friday during a press conference during the promotion of the upcoming Hulu series, Selena sounded very excited. However, she mentioned, “I signed my life away to Disney at a very young age, so I didn’t know exactly what I was doing.”

Furthermore, Selena added, ”I was a kid I didn’t know what I was doing, I was just running around on set, and now I feel like a sponge and I soak up all the wisdom that I can.”

The ”Kiss & Tell” star will appear alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in the comedy-crime series. The series consists of 10-episodes and is slated to release on Aug. 31, this month.

In this comedy series three strangers, Martin, Short, and Gomez (as Mabel) share an obsession with true crime. And their lives revolve around all that drama. Furthermore, one day they suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one such crime.

Selena’s return on TV

Selena also reflected on the upcoming Hulu series, “What I’d say is the level of sophistication of the material is the first reason why I wanted to do this.” The 29-year-old singer plays the role of a New York City resident Mabel who is obsessed with true crime podcasts.

She was happy to disclose that she was surrounded by veteran actors Martin and Short. This star cast helped her to sharpen her acting skills. The singer has great respect for both of them and refers to them as “two crazy uncles.”

“They’ve been doing this longer than I’ve been alive,” she added further with respect for them. ”And I would be so lucky to have a career that’s lasted that long.”

Martin and Short love Selena’s screen presence and vibrancy. Martin added, “When Selena is on screen the show is elevated and more mysterious. The camera loves her.”

Selena intends to engage with her fans on social media platforms as the series starts streaming on Hulu.

 

The Hiatus and Come-back

Selena had released her last solo album ”Revival” in 2015 while the ”Revival tour ended on August 13, 2016, at Vector Arena in New Zealand, Australia. The multi-city tour which occurred in the USA, Canada, Asia Pacific, and ANZ regions was not as successful as it was supposed to be. Many shows in Europe, Brazil, and Mexico had to be canceled due to Selena’s mental health.

Ever since she had taken a hiatus from her acting and music career. She was one of the executive producers for an American teen drama streaming television series developed for Netflix. Netflix streamed this series ”13 Reasons Why” between March 2017 and June 2020 and it had four seasons.

Furthermore, she hosted a cooking show titled ”Selena + Chef’ on HBO Max, which has been renewed successfully for its third season. HBO Max premiered it on August 13, 2020. Her fans feel that this Hulu comedy thriller will be her doorway for a comeback to mainstream acting.
